Geothermal Heat Pumps
A geothermal heat pump is an energy efficient heating system that takes the free, renewable energy from the earth or from a water source. For 1 unit of electricity required to run it the heat pump delivers up to 5 units of heat to the heating system. Kind of like saying 500% efficient! Compare this to oil and gas which are somewhere between 50-95% efficient. An electric furnace one could say is 100% efficient, as each unit of electricity will provide 1 unit of heat.
Heat for the heat pump is collected in a variety of ways. Drilling boreholes and inserting plastic piping (HDPE) into the hole and filling with an antifreeze solution which is recirculated throughout the system is called a vertical loop. Pipes can be buried horizontally in a trench or pit this would be a horizontal configuration. Another heat source is to draw water from a well and pass this water through the heat pump where the heat is captured. The spent water is then discharged. This type of heat source is called an open loop. Each type of loop has it's benefits and drawback thus one style is not necessarily better than another.
